Glimpse of SR RANGANATHAN
August 12th is being celebrated as National Librarian's Day in India, in remembrance of national professor of library science, Dr S R Ranganathan (1892-1972). Dr. Shiyali Ramamrita Ranganathan was born on August 9, 1892 Shiyali, Madras and died on September 27, 1972 in Bangalore. 12th August is being celebrated as Librarian's Day in honour of his Birth Anniversary.
Ranganathan is considered to be the Father of Library Science in India due to his tremendous contribution in the field of Library. Among his work, Five Laws of Library Science (1931) was widely accepted as a definitive statement of the ideal of library service.
The five laws of library Science, according to Ranganathan:
- Books are for use.
- Every reader his or her book.
- Every book its reader.
- Save the time of the reader.
- A library is a growing organism.
